Hot Weather going to affect you; Some simple tips to protect yourself.

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

As you all know i am living at the center zone of Kerala, south India. The April just going to end,but this year it is getting very hot so early.

So we all, very anxious about the March, April and May.

I think it is going to record new high in the temperature chart this year.

Naturally scarcity of water, dust, pollution, and a number of communicable diseases may spread faster.

According to Ayurveda, six seasons are there, this period the "vasantha rithu" going to end and we are entering into "Greeshama Rithu" which will be the beginning of the hot season.

The vatha dosha will aggravate and the Pitha tending to go up - i mean the wind and fire element.
In this season we have to stay away from the food and lifestyle which will aggravate the wind and fire element in the body.

And prefer more food which gives cooling and unctuous properties after the digestion(after reaching the greeshma rithu).

Here is a list;
All the spicy are hot in potency so avoid chilly, pepper etc.

After the sisira rithu next comes the vasantha rithu(february-march) during this season the digestive power will be lesser so we should not take any heavy food stuff which is difficult to digest.

When it become hot, out side the human body, our internal fire energy spreading out hence digestion will be poor. That is why suggesting light and easily digestible food in this season.

Oil massages, oil application through the nostrils, induced vomiting etc can be done now with the direction of an ayurvedic physician in order to cleanse the system(panchakarma therapy).

Sandal paste can be applied over the body after the bath.

The meat should be grilled under fire before eating followed by honey.

Light alcoholic preparations and can accompany with lovely partner - recommended.

The drinking water can be boiled with dried ginger or water added with honey can be used for drinking purposes.

Day time sleep compulsorily avoided in this season.
To avoid sleep we can walk along the green forests or rest under the trees during the day-suggested.
In the diet strictly avoid heavy, cold, unctuous and citrus items.
For example avoid pork, lamb, deep fried items, burgers, pizza, diary products etc.

Can go for steamed and light break fast -porridge is better.
Dinner- soup based noodles preferred.

we will continue... your comments appreciated.

People started getting the heat rashes on the body.
Reddish small small eruptions with itching and oozing of a clear fluid when scratching.

It is a common symptom now in this weather. It is affecting the children mostly.

The following Tips will help to prevent this problem.

Apply the herbal paste all over the body for 10-15 min. before bath.

And you can also boil the water with these herbs for taking bath.

Wind (Vatha) aggravating food items

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

Generally all the root tubers except Carrot.

Say,Beetroot,Tapioca,Potatoes,Sweet Potatoes etc.

Then yellow Dal,Green peas,Groundnuts etc.

Cabbage,Broccoli,Pumpkin also do the same.

If we took the cold items especially after dinner it will delays the digestion as a result of sluggish production of digestive enzymes and acids hence resulting the gas problem, indigestion etc which leads to bloating, burping acidity etc.

All these are the symptoms of elevated vatha dosha(wind element).

The Myth and The Facts about Ayurveda

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

Today i am going to tell you something very different topic.

People says,

1. If we gone for Ayurveda treatment we must do it repeatedly every year without fail - (wrong)

No, not a must,if you can do it, it is better to stay healthy for many years devoid of such kind of illnesses.

At least if we can do three consecutive years, the effect of the treatment may last for another 10- 15 years.

I am telling about the cleansing therapy(panchakarma).

Ayurveda cleanse and rejuvenate the body and help to stay healthy but not treating any disease.

Once our body and mind become healthy the disease is no more.

It helps to prevent the ailments.

There are ways to treat the diseased conditions.

Ayurveda describes about the body types, day to today routines according to the body type as well as the seasonal changes which influencing the physiology of our body.

2. There is a belief that while taking Ayurveda medication we should not use non-veg food stuff - (wrong).

Here also need a briefing, Ayurveda medicines are of herbal origin 99%.

So it is very weak in potency.

It wont work fast and strong as the chemical combinations do.

So we have to provide an ideal condition in order to work the medicines faster and effective.

We have to consider the severity of the illness, body type of the patient, strength of the mind and body, age, gender, other associated complications of the patient and also the seasonal influence on the body.

Say,for example,an over weight patient taking medication to reduce the weight at the same time he or she taking the food and lifestyle which will gain the weight then it wont work.

Not only that,in Ayurveda we prescribes the herbal concoctions,it has to digest and absorb completely then only it will show the results.

We ate a stomach full heavy meal with lot of fried items, sweets, meat, puddings and deserts then on top taking this 15 ml herbal concoction - how it is going to digest and absorb perfectly?

3. Another wrong belief is that Ayurveda medicines contains metals.

In Ayurveda, mainly using the herbs only but the science also explained that in case of non availability of the herbs we can substitute with certain metallic preparations after  the proper purification.

But in south India all these herbs are still available in plenty.

In case when we use the metals,it must be properly purified.

On the other side, there may be some of the product came out without the proper purification and without monitoring.

Not only that many of the herbs contains the traces of minerals and metals naturally.

And in some cases rarely found even the contents similar in sedative drugs.

Many of the herbal extracts using in the chemical medications also.

But still we need not bother about it as it is very very little when compare to steroids and other strong chemical medications.

Ayurveda herbal medications is harmless and have no side effects.

That is the beauty of this medical branch. The word "ayu"means life and "veda" means the science. Ayurveda is the science of life.

The Role of Diet and Lifestyle in Manifesting the Disease - Ayurveda View.

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

Do you ever thought about the role of diet and lifestyle on the diseases.

Ayurvedic Basic concepts and principles proves that on the background of five element theory. Ayurveda says everything in the universe, anything under the sun and the moon are made of these five basic elements (panchabootha) only.

These are the five elements;

1.Space
2.Air
3.Fire
4.Water
5.Earth

Everything created with these five elements only but with different proportion, that is why we are different in size shape weight complexion character etc..

In the human body these five, comprising into three ie. Thridosha.(Three types of life forces)

They are as as follows;

1.Vatha (the wind energy)
2.Pitha (the fire energy)
3.Kapha (the water energy)

All the plants are also made of the five elements only as explained above.

When the three life forces losing their equilibrium it manifesting as the disease. In order to attain the balance we are adding the opposite property.

Say for example the illness is due to the vitiation of the fire element (pitha dosha vitiation),here we apply the water element dominating herbs to pacify the elevated fire element.

In other words, a patient getting acidity which is a fire element symptom here we will apply the grapes which will help to pacify the fire energy or pitha dosha.

The following list will help to show the Characteristics of the Wind element, Diet and Lifestyle:

"Thathra rooksho laghu seetha khara sookshma chalo anila"

The wind or vatha dosha is very rough, light, cold, hard, minute and moving in nature.

Wind aggravating diet and lifestyle;

Root tubers except carrots,like-potatoes,tapioca,ground nut etc.

Lentils like  yellow dal, green peas etc.

All the cold items generally will aggravates the wind element.

So keep away from the fridge frozen items. Avoid cold water for drinking and bathing etc.

People who suffers the wind related (vatha) diseases and we keep on taking wind elevating food stuff, the diseases will turn severe.

Irregular food timings, late night sleep, over stress and strain also will lead to wind disorders.

The wind disorders are, spondylitis, lumbago, rheumatism, osteo arthritis, flatulence, bloating, insomnia, piles, constipation, suspicious mentality, lack of strength both physical and mental, aches and pains etc.

And now we look into the Fire element or Pitha dosha.

The basic nature of pitha dosha are it is very hot, sharp, with little bit unctuous, light and it is tend to spread also.
"Pitham sasneha theekshnoshnam
Laghu visram saram dravam"

some of the diseases due to the elevated fire are;

skin problems, ulcer, bleeding piles, arthritis, burning sensation, swelling,IBS these are some examples.

Here we have to avoid spicy food, hot potency food, oily deep fried, chilly, curd etc.

The Water element nature-diseases and diet are as follows:

"snigdha seetho gurur mandha slakshno mruthsna sthira kapha"

The kapha or water element are unctuous, cold, heavy, sluggish, sticky and dense in nature.

Some of the common diseases due to elevated kapha are high Cholesterol levels, blockages  in the circulatory system, asthma, migraine, rheumatic fever, obesity, carcinoma etc.

Here we have to apply the opposite principles like, hot, light etc.

some of the kapha or water pacifying herbs are; pepper, ginger, clove, chilly, horse gram, all green leafy vegetables which contain more fiber.

And we should avoid or reduce the in take of sweets, cool drinks, meat, ghee, butter, cheese, oily, deep fried etc.

And many more to discuss... we will continue.

Benefits of Ayurvedic Massage "Abyangam"

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

You might be heard a lot of massage variants across the Glob.

The traditional massages originated in different decades at different areas.

There must be some connection in the basic methods.

In Ayurveda the massage is explained as Abyanga.

In Ayurveda massages mainly concentrating on the 107 vital points.

And also have to consider the age & strength of the person, season, severity of illness, area of the disease affected, dominating life force, body type, allergies of the patient etc..

In Ayurveda massage, the medicated oils playing the major role.

An Ayurveda physician can fix the suitable massage oil by analyzing above said points.

Clinically have to consider the following points like Numbness, Aches & Pains,Stiffness of joints,Swelling,Burning sensation,Skin problems like itching, discoloration, scaling, rashes, pigmentation etc.

Usually fixing separate oils for head and body.

In Ayurveda massage no much importance of pressure points and pressure Technics, appropriate oil gently spreading all over the body which sinks and absorbs through the 107 vital points spread all over across the meridians.

It cleanse, vitalize and Rejuvenating the system.

Ayurvedic texts explains the benefits of massages as follows;

"abyangam achareth nithyam sa jarasrama vathaha"
"drushti prasada pushtyayu swapna suthwak dardyakrith"

The above said slogan is from Ashtanga hridayam soothrasthanam Dinacharya Chapter.

It says,a person should apply oil on head and body on daily basis.

it will help to control aging, tiredness, pacifies vatha dosha(wind element),promotes good eye sight, muscle growth, longevity of life, promotes sound sleep, softness of skin and strengthening the muscles tissues.

Even if a person couldn't apply all over the body,it should be applied at least on the middle of the head, ear and on the soles.

The acharya also adding, massage should be avoided who affected the diseases by accumulated kapha dosha(water element), who suffers indigestion, and after the vomiting and purging as part of five fold cleansing therapy.

As a part of the panchakarma therapy (five fold cleansing therapy) abyanga should be done as a prior step to prepare the body for the panchakarma.

Abyanga should be gentle, continuous without break, long strokes, consecutive days  minimum of 7 days as it has to penetrate the seven dhathus, should not be under hot sun preferably in the morning before sun getting hot or in the evening before the sunset.

Should not take cold shower or swim in cold stream just after the  massage, bath with luke warm water preferred.

Diet Restrictions During the early Summer...

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

I am here again, just to remind you about the Diet Restrictions During the Early Summer.

"Summer is very tempting for us to eat frozen and

foods stored in refrigerators.

This could be due to the heat

and exhaustion experienced by our mind and

body." My advice is avoid cold and frozen food

even when your mind cries out for it during these

periods for they are very harmful".

As i explained in my previous blog it is the period where the aggravation of the  water element at its own seat ( Kapha Dosha Chaya avastha- in Ayurveda words) In this season the stagnant Kapha dosha is melting and tend to spread all over the body.

So if we taking the Kapha or the water dominating elements excessively it will leads to the vitiation of the kapha dosha(water element) hence resulting the corresponding state of illnesses.

Here i am going to explain the diet and lifestyle which leads to the kapaha dosha vitiation and what are all the forms of illnesses affecting with aggravated kapha.

Avoid:

1.Day time sleep
2.Heavy food stuff
3.Food which are of cold potency
4.Fatty food
5.Oily food
6.Sweets
7.Diary products excessively

Daytime sleep directly aggravating the kapha Dosha in the body.

Food which are heavy to digest also will cause the same,it makes the digestive fire sluggish.

Cold potency or seetha veerya food also resulting the same as it is the similar property of the kapha dosha.

The characteristics of kapha dosha are

Seetha(cold)

Snigdha(unctuous)

guru(heavy)

mandha(slow)

madhura(sweet)

the following food are of the above nature,
Ghee,Butter,Cheese,oils,sweets,fatty food,deep fried items,pork,lamb,ice creams,cool drinks etc..

With these above said items you may feel good at the moment but lately end of the month it is going to hit you with the following symptoms

cold, fever, sneezing, allergies, asthma, rheumatic fever, elevating the serum cholesterol levels, excess phlegm in the chest, head aches etc..

So we can go with the light and easily digestible food, well cooked items, grilled, vegetable soups, especially soup based dinner, wines moderately, fruits (more citrus and less grapes&bananas),everything in room temperature preferred.

Brisk walking preferred, especially after dinner. No strenuous exercises recommended in this season.

During the summer the sun is the dominant power which will take out the power and energy from the body to the nature hence in ayurveda it is said to be the Adana kala(the nature grasping the power from the body).

In ayurvedic texts these above said points explained as "vasantha rithu charya".

In this article a few things to note:

1.Kapha dosha means the earth and water energy of the body

2.The diseases i mentioned, the patients who all suffers the same must be taken care.

3.It doesn't mean these above said diseases occurring only due to this food and lifestyle, there are so many other factors also involving to manifest the diseases.

4.The season i am talking about the area where started getting hot after the cold weather now.

Anything else to discuss? you are always welcome.
