Benefits of Ayurvedic Massage "Abyangam"

Hello Readers and My Dear Patients,

You might be heard a lot of massage variants across the Glob.



 The traditional massages originated in different decades at different areas.




 There must be some connection in the basic methods.




In Ayurveda the massage is explained as Abyanga.




In Ayurveda massages mainly concentrating on the 107 vital points.




 And also have to consider the age & strength of the person,season,severity of illness,area of the disease affected,dominating life force,body type, allergies of the patient etc..




In Ayurveda massage,the medicated oils playing the major role.




 An Ayurveda physician can fix the suitable massage oil by analyzing above said points. 




Clinically have to consider the following points like Numbness, Aches & Pains,Stiffness of joints,Swelling,Burning sensation,Skin problems like itching,discoloration,scaling,rashes,pigmentation etc.




Usually fixing separate oils for head and body.




 In Ayurveda massage no much importance of pressure points and pressure Technics,appropriate oil gently spreading all over the body which sinks and absorbs through the 107 vital points spread all over across the meridians.




It cleanse,vitalize and Rejuvenating the system. 




Ayurvedic texts explains the benefits of massages as follows;

"abyangam achareth nithyam sa jarasrama vathaha"
"drushti prasada pushtyayu swapna suthwak dardyakrith" 



The above said slogan is from Ashtanga hridayam soothrasthanam Dinacharya Chapter.




It says,a person should apply oil on head and body on daily basis.




it will help to control aging,tiredness,pacifies vatha dosha(wind element),promotes good eye sight,muscle growth,longevity of life,promotes sound sleep,softness of skin and strengthening the muscles tissues.




Even if a person couldn't apply all over the body,it should be applied at least on the middle of the head,ear and on the soles.




The acharya also adding, massage should be avoided who affected the diseases by accumulated kapha dosha(water element), who suffers indigestion, and after the vomiting and purging as part of five fold cleansing therapy. 




As a part of the panchakarma therapy (five fold cleansing therapy) abyanga should be done as a prior step to prepare the body for the panchakarma.




Abyanga should be gentle,continuous without break,long strokes,consecutive days  minimum of 7 days as it has to penetrate the seven dhathus, should not be under hot sun preferably in the morning before sun getting hot or in the evening before the sunset.




 Should not take cold shower or swim in cold stream just after the  massage,bath with luke warm water preferred.
